Couple stabbed in their sleep… pregnant mother dies

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, 17 September, at the Hluleka nature reserve on the KZN Wild Coast, a couple was attacked by knife-wielding suspects. “Matthew said he woke up to being stabbed in the stomach and Karen screaming next to him”. Pregnant mother, Karen Turner, was fatally wounded while her husband Matthew survived and was taken into intensive care. Their 23 month-old son was not harmed in the attack. Karen, a teacher, had celebrated her 31st birthday a day before she was brutally killed. The couple have a farm in Underberg in South Africa and have been married since July 2017.

This brutal attack comes just days after the release of the official police crime statistics, citing a murder figure of 21,022 for the 2018/9 period, and a recorded 18,980 attempted murder incidents. Add to this the massive, and almost unbelievable figure of 170,979 incidents of “assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm”, and one needs no convincing that South Africa is one of the most dangerous countries to live in.

Police said they have launched an investigation and identified one of two suspects. The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) CEO Vuyani Dayimani has said they are working with police to assist with the matter. Magma Security and Investigations are also busy with the case and have full confidence that they will arrest those responsible.

As the family reels at the loss of a daughter and her unborn child, there are simply no words left to console their broken hearts…

South Africa is bleeding badly and all peace-loving South Africans wonder what can be done to stem the tide of violence.
