Feedback from the Brits Family

Colin Leslie Brits (64), who was a bachelor and lived alone on Craigmillar Farm in Elandskraal, Kwazulu Natal was found in his home with a gunshot wound to the head at 16:00 on Monday the 16th of March 2020.

Colin seemed to have been ambushed and a struggle ensued. Staff heard gunshots and went to investigate, discovering his body some time later, after which the alarm was raised.

Colin is survived by his children and four grandchildren. His daughter Bianca Woest said that her father had dreamed of being a farmer since he was a child. He had spent much time on his grandparents’ farm in the North West.

Bianca said her father worked on the cattle farm for his brother, Max Brits. “Dad was a motor mechanic and had a plot of land in the East Rand where he kept animals. He had also lived in Amanzimtoti, on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast and spent a short time in Malawi trying to set up an animal conservation initiative but had contracted malaria.”

Bianca mentioned that her dad did have problems with poachers. He had been on the farm for five years, had grown fond of the area and had made a connection with some wild animals. He had a horse he rode to places where he could not use his bakkie as well. He loved nature and was hard working.

“My brother and I have not visited the crime scene. It is too emotional for us. We are devastated. If his death had been an accident or there was a medical reason for it, we would accept it. For him to be killed in this manner makes one angry.”
