THEFT OUT OF MOTOR VEHICLE

In the ERPC we deal with many reports of theft, and of all those calls ‘theft out of motor vehicle’ is one of the most common. On one of my shifts I received a call from a security company stating that someone had parked their car at a petrol station and a lady’s handbag had been stolen out of the vehicle. The suspects had used a vehicle with false plates to commit this crime and later switched the plates onto a different vehicle.

Some important things to remember with vehicle-related crimes is to note the vehicle make, model and registration. This allows us to check if the vehicle is stolen, wanted for crimes or using false plates.

It will then be loaded to the @Snipr™ database and thereafter alerts will be issued as to the vehicle’s movements, which will be picked up by dispatchers who work with security companies and SAPS to have it located and checked, or the occupants apprehended.

Another important thing to take note of when witnessing a crime: the number and description of the suspects, and if they are armed.

Please do not leave valuable items in your vehicle even if it is locked. Those involved in crimes will have special equipment to get into your vehicle, whether it is parked at home, work or in a shopping centre. Criminals will also work together to distract you, and will not hesitate to hold you at gun or knifepoint until you give up your valuables.

To all the members out there, please keep your valuables locked in the boot while travelling and if you have a cell phone please keep it out of sight and be vigilant as to what is happening around you, especially when you are stationary.
