Netcare Helicopter Crash

A AAA Response activation came through this afternoon from one of our members who reported that there had been a helicopter flying low over their home in the Winterton area in KZN, and soon thereafter, they had heard a crash and an explosion coming from the direction in which the helicopter had been heading.

The member while talking to us was on route to the scene to try to attain further information on what was happening. In the meantime, I made contact with Netcare 911 to alert them to a helicopter crash.

We also immediately dispatched the Starlight VCAT-7 Bell 407 (NPO) with Netcare Advanced Life Support, KZN Management alongside support from SAPS National, Provincial, Cluster, Hawks, Crime Intelligence and the Winterton Station Commander, Capt. Van Wyk.

On arrival at the scene, our member advised that the Helicopter was engulfed in flames and that it had been a medical helicopter. All emergency services were made aware that we were dealing with one of our own. It was then discovered that the helicopter that had crashed was in fact from our own Netcare911 partners and that it was expected to land in Durban on a flight from Johannesburg. We informed our KZN Netcare team members who are stationed in our dispatch centre of the devastating news. For the Netcare team this became a personal state of emergency for them to get to the crash site.

Whilst on the call with our member who we also asked for any images from the scene of the helicopter or anything that would be of value to the case in order to send through to the relevant parties, the Advanced Life Support teams and NETCARE representatives for KZN were busy prepping the second helicopter to dispatch to the scene. At this current time, the cause of the crash is yet to be determined.

The ground teams and all relevant services are currently on scene. Netcare 911 will update all members in due course.

A kind thank you also goes out to the member on scene for her quick thinking in activating a AAA Response panic, and for being willing to go the extra mile to offer assistance. Our hearts go out to the Netcare team on this incredible tragedy.
