ATTEMPTED SUICIDE
Suicide is when a person intentionally ends their own life. The reasons may include any of the following:
- Depression
- Bipolar disorder
- Personality disorder
- Anxiety
- Substance abuse
Reasons for suicide range from the stresses of life including depression, financial difficulties, relationship problems or bullying. Approximately 10% of all unnatural deaths in South Africa are due to suicide, while others can be helped, or seek help, before it’s too late.
Calls we receive in the ERPC vary widely, but when a life is at stake it’s “all hands on deck” to prevent these situations from happening.
I received a call from a member who had a friend who was suicidal. She had driven off in her car, and we were informed that she had also taken some sort of tablets. Luckily we were able to get the make and registration number of her vehicle, and it was loaded to the SNIPR™ camera network. We managed to track her whereabouts, with a lady from our crisis centre on standby to help.
We were fortunate to find the lady before she let her emotions get the best of her and managed to make sure she was safe. Her family was contacted and informed that she was found safe and unharmed.
We all deal with problems and emotions differently. Sometimes our emotions get the best of us and we make hasty and irrational decisions that affect us and our families. The important thing to remember is that you are not alone, as we all know life is not easy sometimes but there will always be people out there to help you and to talk to you about what is wrong, whether friends, family or trained professionals. Furthermore there are prescription medications that will help. If you are not one to believe in medication then there are still professionals out there that will be able to help.
Be safe out there and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You will not be judged for doing this. Remember, when you are dealing with something, don’t make rash decisions and don’t let society make your emotions worse. Don’t be afraid. Many people are out there to help and are there for you in your time of need.
