Attempted Suicide

Dispatcher Files

Shortly after starting my night shift I received a call informing me of an attempted suicide. The female victim had taken an overdose of pills and was semi-conscious. A family member said that she had been suffering from depression and had recently been discharged from a hospital which treated psychiatric patients.

I immediately dispatched @Netcare 911 to attend to the lady. When arriving on scene they informed me that the patient was P2 (moderate to serious). I kept in touch with her parents during this time and her mother said that the medics were treating her at home and agreed not to transport her to hospital.

The following day I called again to find out how she was doing and was told that she was stable and recovering well.

Suicide prevention starts with recognising the warning signs and taking them seriously. If you think a friend or family member is considering suicide, there’s plenty you can do to help save a life.

Suicide is a desperate attempt to escape suffering that has become unbearable. Major warning signs for suicide include talking about killing or harming oneself, talking or writing a lot about death or dying, and seeking out things that could be used in a suicide attempt, such as weapons and drugs.

These signals are even more dangerous if the person has a mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder, suffers from alcohol dependence, previous suicide attempts, or has a family history of suicide.
