I received a call from one of our members explaining that a large sum of money had been withdrawn from his son’s account. His son had never used online banking and he had not given anyone his PIN so the cause was unknown at the time. 

During the investigation, it was found that his account had been hacked through cyber crime.

Tips for safe banking:

1. Choose an account with a two factor authorisation method such as a fingerprint scanner or password and a one time PIN feature.
2. Choose a very strong password so that it cannot be easily guessed/cracked.
3. Keep your devices updated.
4. Keep abreast of communications from your bank, as they often send out warnings and updates of the various scams doing the rounds.
5. Avoid clicking on adverts and emails that seem suspicious.
6. Only use online banking with a trusted device or computer, and preferably not using public wi-fi networks.
7. Always log out and never click “remember password”.
8. Set up “account notifications’ so that you know what’s happening at all times with your account.
9. Keep an eye on your account and watch for any suspicious activity – report any transactions not made by you.
