Steps to follow when assisting someone who has collapsed

Dispatcher Files

During our recent day shift we received a call from a AAA Response member advising that her friend had collapsed and they urgently needed an ambulance. We dispatched Netcare 911 and within several minutes they arrived on scene and assisted the member and her friend, who was admitted to hospital for tests.

Steps to follow when assisting someone who has collapsed:

  • Call your local emergency number or activate your AAA Response App
  • If possible, carefully lay the victim flat on a hard surface
  • Check for breathing: look for chest movement, listen for breathing sounds and feel for breathing movements. If the person is not breathing normally, place your hands in the centre of the chest. Using the heel of your palm, push hard and fast. You should push at a rate of 100 compressions a minute, 5 cm deep. Continue doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until help arrives.
