What to do if you have knocked down a pedestrian

Dispatcher Files

On my recent night shift I received a call from one of our staff members who reported an accident that had occurred in Pinetown where an adult male pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle.

The patient was complaining of pain in his head and neck and was bleeding from his nose. I contacted Netcare 911 for who immediately dispatched an ambulance. The patient was then transported to the nearest hospital.

What to do if you have knocked down a pedestrian

  • Stop! It is illegal to leave the scene of an accident.
  • Get help immediately – Contact SAPS and Medical responders, or press your AAA Response button as soon as possible
  • If there are no serious injuries, remove yourself & passengers out of harm’s way and secure the scene with advanced warning to other motorists by blocking off the scene and placing emergency triangles at least 30m behind the scene, or as far as necessary to ensure clear visibility for oncoming traffic.
  • Only then should you try to help other injured people.
  • Do not attempt to move injured people unless they are in direct danger from oncoming traffic.
  • If the pedestrian is not incapacitated, exchange names and phone numbers.
  • Ask yourself –  what would the reasonable person do
  • Do not attempt to administer medical treatment unless you are a qualified medical professional, or know CPR.
  • When providing a statement to police, give a truthful account of what transpired.
  • You can contact your insurance providers to assess any damage to your vehicle, or provide roadside/tow assistance.
