A stroke happens when…

Signs and symptoms are one of the most important factors that one must be aware of, whether you suffer from a medical condition or not.

A stroke happens when blood vessels in the brain are either blocked or burst, resulting in numbness in the face, arm or leg, usually on one side.

Symptoms are: confusion and trouble speaking, vision problems, dizziness and loss of coordination/balance and sometimes headaches.

On one of my shifts I received a call from a young lady who was worried about her dad who she suspected had suffered a stroke. Luckily she was aware of the symptoms and was able to contact us for assistance. On learning of the young lady’s emergency I contacted Netcare911 and passed on the information. Netcare quickly dispatched a medic who arrived on scene to assist and stabilise the patient.

On following up later, we were informed that her dad was doing well and recovering nicely and she thanked us and Netcare for the quick assistance.

Always remember, your body has a way of sending you messages to let you know something needs attention, so listen to your body and look after yourself.
