Assistance required with Domestic Violence

We often receive calls during the evenings from members requesting assistance regarding domestic violence. Domestic violence is not limited to physical abuse but can occur verbally as well. These cases take place in the workplace, home, school and social environments.

Domestic Violence is defined as ‘abusive behavior from an individual where he/she tries to gain or maintain control over a situation or person’.

On one such night shift we received a call from a member who was in need of assistance for an elderly gentlemen that rents on his property to get him medical attention as the hospital had denied him treatment for some or other reason, and the man’s family had become enraged as a result.

On receiving this information we dispatched a SAPS van to assist with the situation and to keep things from escalating. The family had taken their elderly family member back to the hospital to get the treatment needed. This issue was resolved on scene with SAPS members and avoided further domestic violence. However we were unable to obtain further information on the family member , if he had received the medical attention required in the first place.

Luckily this case was one of the less severe cases and there was no physical altercations and only verbal threats.

Some victims are usually in denial, they also experience confusion, fear, hopelessness and shame. This is why it is so important to seek help as these cases often lead victims to believe that these domestic violence is their fault when its not.

Some victims have psychological repercussions  as a result of these acts of violence:

  • Anxiety.
  • Panic attacks.
  • Low self-esteem and low self-confidence.
  • Depression or depressive symptoms.
  • Suicidal thoughts and even attempted suicide.
  • Guilt feelings and believing the abuse is their fault or that it is deserved.
  • Alcohol or substance abuse or addiction.
  • Social withdrawal and isolation.
