Bakkie veers off road

Dispatcher Files

Today I worked late and only left the ERPC well after 8 p.m. It was dark and the rain was relentless with the mist adding to the mix.

After a quick grocery stop, we drove very carefully along the normal route home as the roads were slippery. There had been two accidents earlier in the day, so we were extra cautious.

On the opposite side of the road a few metres ahead, a white Ford Bantam took the corner too sharply and went over the pavement and landed in a tree. We immediately turned around and went back to help.

The vehicle was smoking but the rain made short of that. The male driver had his arm out the small gap of a side window and only the front of the vehicle was badly damaged. I peered at him through the window expecting the worst, but he seemed fine. The door was jammed shut and was hard to get open, but came loose eventually.

I helped the gentleman out of the car and kept looking him over to see if he had any injuries. He was very disorientated so he rested his full weight on me when he leaned to the side. I activated my TrackBox app and a dispatcher called me back a second later. The ambulance arrived soon thereafter along with a tow truck to pull the vehicle out.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was grateful that we were able to assist him so quickly.

Kind Regards,
